Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1973, Valuev began his boxing career in 1993. He quickly rose through the amateur ranks, winning multiple national and international titles. In 2005, he turned professional and made his debut in Germany.

Valuev's exceptional size and reach gave him a significant advantage in the ring. He had a powerful jab and accurate hooks that he used to control the distance and outpoint his opponents. In 2005, he defeated Larry Donald to win the vacant WBA heavyweight title, becoming the first Russian to hold a major heavyweight championship.

Valuev successfully defended his title four times before losing it to Ruslan Chagaev in 2007. He regained the title in a rematch a year later but lost it again to David Haye in 2009. Despite these setbacks, Valuev remained a top contender and retired in 2010 with a professional record of 50 wins (34 by knockout) and 2 losses.

Military Service

Prior to his boxing career, Valuev served in the Russian military. He underwent mandatory military service in the early 1990s, during the turbulent period following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
